Fat Transfers & Fat Injections Atlanta Plastic Surgery, P.C.

Performed at our Atlanta, Alpharetta and Cumming, GA locations.

Fat transfer, also known as fat injection, uses liposuction to take fat from one part of the body and then inject it into another area of the body for added volume. Excess fat is removed from an area of the body, such as the abdomen, jowls, thighs or buttocks and then cleansed so that fat cells are isolated. Next, the fat is injected into the areas of the body that need volume. Fat transfer can be more beneficial over other body contouring alternatives because the fat cells come from the patient’s own body and there is no risk of allergic reaction. The most common areas for fat transfer include the face and buttocks.

Another common area where fat transfer is used is buttock augmentation, also called the Brazilian Butt Lift. During this procedure, excess fat is removed from the thighs, abdomen, or back, and is then transplanted into the buttocks for a fuller, more rounded look. Fat transfer for the buttocks is often preferred over buttock implants because results feel more natural and the risk of post-operative complications is significantly decreased.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fat Transfer

Are Fat Transfer procedures safe?
Fat Transfer has generally proven to be safer and to cause fewer complications than the use of artificial implants for many body contouring and facial rejuvenation procedures. Whenever artificial materials are placed within the body, there is always a chance, albeit slight, that the body will react negatively and try to force them out. Since fat transfer uses purified fat that has been taken from the patient’s own body via liposuction, there is virtually no chance of such rejection occurring. Although it is less invasive than many other forms of cosmetic plastic surgery, fat transfer is still a surgical procedure and, as such, is not without some element of risk. However, suitable candidates generally experience excellent, long-term results.

Who is a suitable candidate for Fat Transfer?
Adults who are at or near their ideal weight and who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone, are optimal candidates for liposuction, and so are usually suitable candidates for fat transfer as well. The procedure has a variety of different applications, and can be used to restore youthful fullness to the face, accentuate the natural contours of the breasts, or even augment the hips and buttocks. Since the procedure does require a source of fat that can be removed, patients should have some amount of excess body fat, typically in isolated areas of the abdomen or thighs. As with all cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, patients generally enjoy the most satisfaction when they go into the procedure with a positive outlook, specific, well-articulated goals, and realistic expectations.
